A rare opportunity to admire up close one of the rediscovered masterpieces by Michelangelo Merisi: the Portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini created by Caravaggio.
Recently acquired by the Italian State to enrich the collection of the National Galleries of Ancient Art, the artwork is presented to the public in the magnificent Capitoline Hall of Palazzo della Minerva in Rome before its final placement.
The painting depicts the future Pope Urban VIII in his youth and fully expresses the extraordinary technique of Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro, with strong expressiveness and a raking light typical of the artist’s mature style.
