A simple trek with breathtaking views of the Rhaetian Alps, cozy mountain huts, alpine lakes, and flower-filled meadows. The perfect spot for a high-altitude excursion in Madesimo, Valtellina.

Introduction

If there’s a spot in Valtellina that gives you a view you’ll hardly forget, it’s Pizzi dei Piani. We’re in Madesimo, at almost 2,000 meters, on a plateau that seems suspended between sky and rock. From here, the gaze sweeps across the Rhaetian Alps, from Pizzo Stella to the Bernina, with a silence broken only by the wind. You don’t need to be an athlete: the trail is easy, suitable for everyone, and the view comes quickly. I was there in late June, with meadows full of flowers and a sun that was warm but not oppressive. A place that gets under your skin, without unnecessary words.

Historical Notes

Pizzi dei Piani does not have a history written in books, but it is tied to the tradition of alpine pasture and the shepherds who have brought their flocks to these pastures for centuries. The area was part of the ancient communication route between Valchiavenna and Switzerland, used by smugglers and merchants. In the 1960s, the arrival of ski facilities changed the face of Madesimo, but this plateau remained a quiet, preserved corner. Today, you will find two mountain huts here: Rifugio Pizzi dei Piani and Rifugio Nido dell’Aquila, rest stops that keep the mountain hospitality alive.

The Trail: A Green Carpet to the Sky

From Madesimo you can take the chairlift, but the real beauty is hiking up on foot. Trail no. 25 climbs gently through the woods, then opens onto lush green meadows. In half an hour you’ll reach the first mountain hut, but I recommend continuing to Lago di Pizzi dei Piani, a small mirror of water reflecting the peaks. In summer the grassy carpet is dotted with red lilies and gentians. The air is so clean it feels like breathing for the first time. When you reach the top, the lake is a reward: a few steps and you’re there, with the water changing color with the sky.

Mountain Huts: Rest and Tradition

After the hike, stopping at the Rifugio Pizzi dei Piani is almost mandatory. Run with care, it serves simple but well-made dishes: pizzoccheri, polenta taragna, local cheeses. The owner is a mountain enthusiast and knows the area’s stories. A bit higher up, the Rifugio Nido dell’Aquila has a stunning panoramic terrace – perfect for an aperitif with a view. Both are also reachable by chairlift if you don’t feel like walking, but the food tastes better when you’ve earned it.

Why Visit

Three good reasons: easy access: even with children or dogs (on a leash) you can reach it without any problems; 360° panorama: from Pizzo Stella to Bernina, every cloud offers a different spectacle; low crowds compared to other Valtellina destinations, so if you’re looking for peace and quiet, you’re in the right place. Plus, the mountain huts serve typical dishes at fair prices, which is not a given at high altitudes.

Best Time to Visit

The most beautiful time? Late spring and early summer, when the meadows burst with flowers. But autumn, when the larches turn golden, is magical too. Pick a day with clear skies: early morning or late afternoon offer a light that caresses the mountains. If you can, avoid the mid-August holiday weekend: there’s no crowd, but peace is everything.

Exploring the Surroundings

If you have time, head down to Madesimo to wander through its historic center with stone houses and artisan shops. A few kilometers away lies the Valle del Liro, with its waterfalls and the trail leading to Lake Dosdè – another easy yet atmospheric walk. Or, for a dive into history, visit the Fortino di Madesimo, a fascist-era fortification now repurposed as a museum.
