💡 Did You Know…?
A local legend tells of a secret underground passageway leading from the castle to the Magra River, used for escapes or supplies during sieges. Historically, the fortress was long contested: the Malaspina family ceded it to Genoa in 1221, but conflicts continued. In the 15th century, it became the property of the Campofregoso family, one of the Genoese dogal families. Today, during some visits, you can still see the cistern for collecting rainwater, a vital element for withstanding sieges, and the remains of the ancient stables.
